A Charleston man will be biking across the country beginning this weekend to raise awareness of child sexual abuse.

Tyler Gilliam and two fellow cyclists hope to raise $40,000 for Darkness to Light on a nearly three-month trip from Marion Square to Los Angeles.

The local nonprofit is nationally recognized for its efforts to teach adults about the signs of abuse. Gilliam hopes to do some educating about the issue along the way.

“It’s a difficult subject to discuss,” he says. “But public discussion and education is the only way to fight back and prevent these crimes from occurring.”

Darkness to Light will host a send-off event from 4-7 p.m. on Fri., July 30, at Marion Square.
