THE CHARLESTON SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ANNOUNCES
FIVE EDUCATIONAL PERFORMANCES AT THE
CHILDREN’S MUSEUM OF THE LOWCOUNTRY IN FEBRUARY, 2008
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra announces a new partnership with the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry which will bring short, educational, child-friendly performances by CSO musicians to the museum throughout the month of February. The performances will kick off on Saturday, February 2 and will occur each Tuesday of the month on the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th at 11:00 AM. All performances take place at the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, 25 Ann Street and are free with museum admission.
The Symphony’s partnership with the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry is the most recent addition to the Charleston Symphony’s impressive roster of educational programs. Throughout the 07-08 Season, members of the Charleston Symphony will perform nearly 70 educational performances, exposing many thousands of children to music at an early age. In the month of November, CSO chamber ensembles traveled to schools through out Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties to perform demonstrational In-School recitals. The CSO’s popular Kinderkonzerts, occurring 6 times this season in downtown Charleston, Mt. Pleasant and Summerville are delighting young children and toddlers with entertaining music and stories. On March 11-13, 2008, the Charleston Symphony will fill the Gaillard Auditorium with Children from over 60 area elementary and middle schools for curriculum integrated Young People’s Concerts. This season also introduced a new series of Family Concerts at the Sottile Theater and West Ashley High School.
“The Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry seemed like a natural collaborator for the CSO,” says Resident Conductor and Director of Education Programs, Scott Terrell, “Bringing music to children in Charleston and neighboring communities has always been a priority for the Charleston Symphony and this is a great way to reach an even wider audience.” Beginning with a Saturday morning kick off of three ensembles, the CSO will bring a chamber ensemble to the Children’s Museum each Tuesday morning for the four weeks of February. Ensembles will include String Quintets, Woodwind Quintets, a Brass Quintet and a Percussion Trio. Families are encouraged to enjoy the performance and to spend the morning exploring and playing in the museum’s many exhibits.
