IllVibeTheTribe’s AsiahMae recently spoke with local hip-hop artist Jah Jr, who’ll perform alongside DJ SCrib at this weekend’s Cultura Festival, Charleston’s first all-hip-hop, dance, and R&B fest debuting at the Royal American on Sat. April 20 at 5 p.m.
CP: Why do you feel Cultura is important?
JJ: This is something, from my point of view, that I’ve never seen happen before in the city of Charleston. A festival featuring some of the hardest-working artists in the city, and a festival for the BLACK culture here. A precedent is being set, and I love it.
CP: Why is it important for you to be a part of this inaugural festival?
JJ: I’m honestly beyond honored and extremely thankful to be a part of this festival. I can say with full confidence that SCrib and I have worked hard, and I, with SCrib already being established in Charleston, have done my best to make a name for myself here. Our hard work alone exemplifies the importance in being a part of this inaugural festival.
CP: What do you hope to gain from being a part of this?
JJ: I hope to gain new opportunities for SCrib and myself, more love from current and new fans, and a great time performing amongst, and in front of, my friends and family.
CP: What are you currently working on that you’re looking forward to sharing?
JJ: So I have been recording an abundance of new music. That’s all I will say.
CP: What do you want fans to take away from your set?
JJ: That this young man from Dublin, Georgia has a story to tell that everyone can feel. I also want them to understand that this is only the beginning, and that I appreciate and love each and every one of them.
