According to Time magazine, David Letterman has announced that his last time hosting CBS’s The Late Show will be Wed. May 20. The late-night comedian has sat behind the desk for 22 years, after working with Johnny Carson, his mentor. Prior to his time as host, Letterman served as Johnny Carson’s co-host starting in 1978 and had a three-month stint with a daytime talk show before hosting Late Night with David Letterman. A split between Letterman and NBC led him to CBS.

Letterman will hand over the late-night spot to Charleston’s own prodigal son Stephen Colbert. Colbert’s start date has not been decided, however The Colbert Report‘s last show will air Dec. 18 on Comedy Central at 11:30 p.m.
