I took some of my own advice this weekend and went to see Deja Vu, put on by the Flowertown Players in Summerville. Let me start off by saying I am by no means a theatre critic, so forgive me if I sound ignorant. That said, I really enjoyed it. I didn’t know what to expect since I don’t know much about the Flowertown Players (or any Charleston theatre stuff), but they did a great job with a hilarious play. The James F. Dean Community Theatre in teensy downtown Summerville was one of the best parts of the evening. It’s trite, but it really was like going back in time as we rolled up to the blinking marquee lights on the old-fashioned main street. And the meet-the-cast [image-1]reception afterwards, with simple little home-made chicken salad sandwiches and punch, was relaxed and refreshing. But though all appearances would make you think you’re back in the ’50s, the subject matter of the play would beg to differ. I don’t want to give away the plot, but you could definitely say it’s a gender-bending comedy with a shockingly funny surprise ending. When the curtain went down, everyone just looked at each other like, Did that just happen? In a good way. Being a French play (translated into English of course) there were plenty of little jokes about Americans as well. Go see it for an old-fashioned night out with a twist. Lots of them, actually.
