Heyward Sims, a.k.a. Devereaux, released his latest record Pineapple Flex this month. The follow-up to his EP Cacti Pace began at Charleston Sound, where he had recorded with a side project called Death Becomes Even the Maiden. However, the new LP was done at a friend’s house on King Street. “I’d be lying if I said Charleston didn’t rub off on the album. Taking in King Street at night and between takes while recording added a lot to the character of the record,” Sims says. “The sights, sounds, food, people, and drinks all added to it.” The track “Bikini” is about Folly Beach, and Sims’ friends have varied reactions to it. “My friend in Richmond, Va. said the song made him ‘want to wear Jordache,’” he says. “And another person said it sounded like ‘something rich people who do a lot of drugs would listen to.’ Both sound great to me.”
