Former state Republican Party chair Katon Dawson has announced that he will not seek to replace Michael Steele as the GOP’s national party chair.
Previous speculation had Dawson making a run for the post. In fact, earlier this year, some were even speculating that Dawson wanted to throw a little GOP coup and kick Steele to the curb before the 2010 mid-terms.
In a Post and Courier report, Dawson now says that he’d rather stay in the Palmetto State then seek a job in D.C. Other than that he hopes to get a Republican elected president.
I call bullshit.
We all know that Dawson lost to Steele for the Republican Party chair in 2009 because the former SCGOP chair was a member of a whites-only country club in Columbia. Following Barack Obama’s victory in 2008, the national GOP didn’t want to risk being further branded the party of old white guys, so Dawson was out and Steele was in.
Unfortunately, Steele has butted heads with the party at large on numerous occasions, only to later bow down to the GOP powers that be each and every time. The man has no balls.
That said, he did oversee an asswhoopin’ the likes of which we haven’t seen in a while.
As for Dawson, as much as he may want to head the GOP and as much as the rest of the GOP wants him to, he’s damaged goods. The 2010 GOP is the party of Nikki Haley and Tim Scott, not a guy who thought it was a good idea to join a country club where blacks — and Jews a while back — were not welcome.
