Flipping through the late-late talk shows last night, I noticed a strange coincidence: two modern rock acts with drummers putting the old “phony double kick drum” trick in use. On Late Night with David Letterman, Ben Kweller’s drummer Mark Strepro was “working” an extra bass drum. Over at Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the Fall Out Boy drummer Andy Hurley had an extra bass drum as well. Neither were mic’d. Neither were vital, other than as “cool” rock and roll decoration.

[image-1] Why, such antics haven’t been employed since Kenney Jones replaced Keith Moon in The Who in 1979 (his extra kick drum didn’t even have a pedal attached … he said it “balanced the appearance of the kit for the audience”).
