There are lots of different barbecue places around the state with the name Duke’s. But the Duke’s we’re talking about is Terry O’Quinn’s barbecue joint in Walterboro. For 25 years, Duke’s has been serving an all-you-can-eat buffet, with typical fare like rice and hash, mac and cheese, fried chicken, and more. They slow cook their meat overnight, cut it up in the morning, and then serve it with a choice of spicy or mild mustard-based sauce.
Bryan O’Quinn, Terry’s son, and his business partner Eric Beltz are expanding with a second Duke’s BBQ on 331 Folly Road. The old Capt. D’s is currently getting an overhaul to suit the Duke’s needs. O’Quinn says they’ll be using the same menu and techniques as they do in Walterboro. If it’s not broken, don’t fix it, right? Duke’s BBQ opens in about a month or so. Let’s say July just to be safe.
