Forget paninis and grilled cheese. Tortas are everywhere right now. Often described as a Mexican- or Cuban-style sandwich served warm on a white flaky bun, the hot sandwich is making the rounds around town — last week Artisan Meat Share had a torta special. So if you’re in the mood to heat up your sammy game, we’ve got a list of where to find the next best thing.

For an innovative spin on Mexican flavors, try one of Minero’s tortas. The Sloppy Jose Torta includes ground beef, lettuce, avocado, pickled vegetables, red fresno, and Chihuahua cheese. Switch it up with the Hotdog Confit and Deli Ham Torta, which includes a fried hotdog, deli ham, lettuce, pickled vegetables, avocado, tomato, and chipotle mayo. Both tortas are served on bread baked from Butcher and Bee and are priced at $9.50.

Mex 1 Coastal Cantina has a few torta variations on their menu, but the Bangin’ Shrimp ($9.95) and the Carnitas torta ($9.25) are particularly appetizing. The Bangin’ Shrimp torta is made with lightly fried shrimp with spicy sauce and topped with cabbage, cilantro, and a drizzle of Mex 1 Sweet Heat sauce. The Carnitas torta combines slow smoked pork with Serrano jicama slaw and lime crema. [image-3]
At Zia Taqueria, all tortas are served on freshly toasted telera bread and stacked with black beans, caramelized onions, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and finished with a cilantro jalapeño spread. Your meat options include grilled fish, sautéed shrimp, pastor, beef barbacoa, portabella mushroom, chicken yucatan, carnintas, or carne asada. Roasted corn on the cob comes on the side. The prices range from $8.99-$10.99.
Cha Cha’s has two tortas on their menu for $7.95, and the price includes one side. The Sloppy Jose torta is composed of ground beef, lettuce, tomato, jalapeño, and crushed Fritos. The Cubano contains roasted pork, Chihuahua cheese, bacon, and black beans and is topped with cilantro crema, chipotle mustard and avocado.
Chow down on some Cuban-style tortas at the new Cuban restaurant in Mt. Pleasant. The Americano features four different tortas. The Cubano Americano is loaded with pulled pork, chipotle black beans, pickled red onion, Chihuahua cheese, mustard barbecue and avocado. The Cubano consists of pulled pork, thinly sliced ham, swiss cheese, Dijon aioli, and pickles. Spiced chicken breast, pepper jack cheese, sweet peppers, pickled red onion, and Chihuahua cheese make up the chicken torta. Last but not least on the list, the Burger Frita is the combination of two angus beef patties, Chihuahua cheese, papas fritas, lettuce, tomato, and onion. The prices for these four range from $9.50 to $10.50 and come with your choice of a side.
