It’s hot dog month, y’all, which means you can indulge in tube meats like you’re Takeru Kobayashi in training. Of course, not all dogs are created equal. The RiverDogs stadium sets the gold standard for creative creations in this town, but since there aren’t any games this weekend you’ll have to get your wiener fix somewhere else. Here’s a rundown of some of our favorite places to find hot dogs in a bun.

Jack Hurley is spicing up the menu at his three Jack’s Cosmic Dogs locations for National Hot Dog month. He’s featuring four locally made sausages with homemade toppings. There’s bratwurst with grilled onions and spicy mustard, kielbasa with Jack’s barbecue sauce and grilled onions, chicken chorizo with coleslaw and mango pepper ketchup, and a hot Italian with zippy onion relish. If you’re looking to celebrate with a hotdog, the most popular is the classic Jack’s Cosmic Dog topped with sweet potato mustard, blue cheese coleslaw, and meaty chili.

At Skoogie’s in Mt. Pleasant we heartily recommend going all the way with the Chicago Dog, which has mustard, relish, onions, sauerkraut, peppers, pickles, cheese, tomatoes, and celery salt. Or you could keep it simple with their popular chili dog. They’ve also got Polish sausage if you’re feeling up for a meaty adventure.

Up in Park Circle at the Sparrow, co-owners Cami Kind and Parker Smith each have a signature hot dog. Kind’s is The Kind of Awesome, a dog cooked in sesame mandarin dressing, covered in fresh sautéed mushrooms, onions, bacon, Dijon mustard, melted pepper jack, and topped with cilantro, fresh cucumbers, and scallions. Smith’s is The Crunch Nasty: a dog nestled in a hoagie roll is topped with homemade sloppy joe, bacon, nacho cheese, and kettle chips. You can choose your dog: either a Nathan’s 100 percent beef hot dog boiled in PBR or a whole carrot (about the size of a beef dog) boiled in PBR, garlic oil, and seared so the outside is soft but the inside still has a crunch.

West Ashley’s the Tin Roof has a bestseller that will make you feel like Sunday morning, The Maple Leaf, a beef dog covered in maple-soy syrup, bacon, relish, and mustard. You can also find the classic Chicago style smothered in mustard, relish, banana peppers, tomato, pickle spear, onion, and celery salt. Be sure to check out their homemade jalapeño pimento cheese, too.
