My beef is with weak U.S. remakes of solid foreign films. This year saw Let Me In, Dinner for Schmucks, The Experiment, and Death at a Funeral. The studios are already hard at work turning the gripping Girl With the Dragon Tattoo into a new The Long Kiss Goodnight, giving Akira the live-action treatment, and converting Korean horror-comedy The Host into another Cloverfield. Is Hollywood that low on inspiration, or do they think Americans just aren’t clever enough to comprehend a story unless they dumb it down and fill it with big names? Do yourselves a favor, Charlestonians, and be sure to check out the original before watching a remake. You’ll often find that it’s a whole different experience.
