It’s been three years since Henry and Chai Eang decided to open up the third incarnation of their popular Thai restaurant Basil at the Shoppes at Seaside Farms in Mt. Pleasant. That’s three long years that East Cooperites have been waiting for this Best of Charleston winner to come to their neck of the woods, which it did unofficially on Saturday night. Friends and family were invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony and dinner to celebrate the new space.
To say that this Basil will bring a bit of Upper King Street to the heart of suburbia is an understatement. The sleek two-story restaurant — with floor-to-ceiling windows, wood details throughout, and a kitchen separated from diners by a big wall of glass — would feel metropolitan even in the midst of downtown.
Henry Eang says that when he designed the building, he wanted people to be able to enjoy the ambiance, even if they didn’t like Thai food. So if summer rolls aren’t your thing, head upstairs to the sleek and secluded bar, where you can enjoy a drink on one of the second-story balcony’s loungey couches.
Eang adds that the focus of the space is on outdoor dining, an amenity that is much expanded compared to the downtown Basil. The large downstairs patio provides plenty of waterfront seating opportunities (there’s a lake in Seaside Farms, if you didn’t know already). A private room off the foyer features large windows that can open when the weather improves, and upstairs in the bar, there are three large garage-style doors that open as well.
The menu available on Saturday evening was par for the course compared to the original location, so you can still expect the same pad Thai, Basil duck, and curries you’ll find on King Street. For its first week, Basil will be open for dinner starting at 5 p.m. They’ll start lunch service soon.
