Bringing the action to Folly Beach this weekend is the Folly Beach Challenge with an added, day before kayak and Stand Up Paddleboard race. Participants can register in either or both for a chance to compete for grand prix awards to be given to for the lowest combined times in both races. The kayak and Stand Up Paddleboard race is Saturday and is $30 and $25 Charleston County residents.
Sunday’s Folly Beach Challenge eliminates the swim element of the triathlon and replaces it with 3-mile paddle up the Folly River, followed by an 8.5-mile beach bike, and a 3-mile beach run. Essentially the twists of this triathlon involve trading pavement for the more abundant, and scenic, Folly Beach sand.
The recommended gear for race participants: shoes that can get wet and remain on feet while in the water, a swim suit or nylon shorts, sun protection including a hat, sunglasses, and screen, a 2-3 quart plastic water bottle, and clothing for any unexpected weather conditions.
Participants must be at least 16 years of age and must bring all equipment needed to successfully complete the Beach Challenge. Registration costs for individual participants is $44 and $36 for Charleston County residents. If you wish to compete in a 3-person team one member must be 18-years old and cost is $92 and $76 for in-county residents.
Registration for this coming Sunday’s Folly Beach Challenge online registration cut-off is Friday. The absolute last chance to register will be at the packet pick-up Saturday. There will be no race-day registration so please keep the deadlines in mind if you are interested in a fun twist on a traditional triathlon.
