Eddie Hogan, longtime publisher and editor of Charleston’s Free Time (“The Lowcountry’s Original Entertainment Newspaper”), is on the road to recovery after some serious medical treatment. He received a kidney transplant in May, and, with a weakened immune system, battled infections through the summer and fall.

“Somehow, he got a bacteria, and it hit him quickly and really knocked him out,” reports his wife Laura. “It was quite scary for me. I can’t imagine how it was for him. They released him from the hospital last week after just getting out of ICU, but he is much better.”

Hogan published the first issue of Free Time in Aug. 1990. The editor/publisher deserves praise for cranking out a semi-monthly collection of music stories, show listings — in Charleston and beyond — and locally written editorials and columns from such coastal characters as Andy “Smoky” Weiner, Tom “Noonan” Werner, Skye Suarez, and Kevin Oliver, among others. All classified “musicians” advertisements are still free to musicians.
