Just because you’re broke doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to do. Here are this week’s best free events.
Monday:
Redux continues their Double Vision Lecture Series with Robert Lange and Dr. Patrick Lovegrove tonight at 6 p.m. There will be a meeting with the South Carolina Arts Commission at North Charleston City Hall from 6:45-8 p.m. They’re looking for public input on what to put in their long-range plan for the next 10 years. At 7 p.m., the Terrace hosts a screening of the documentary Invisible Children — It’s about children affected by the ongoing war in Uganda, and some of the Ugandans in the film will speak to the audience afterward. And for all you wine connoisseurs, Bin 152 uncorks yet another wine bottle for you to taste for free from 4 p.m.-2 a.m.
Tuesday: Mike Thompson is rockin’ the joint at Art’s Bar and Grill at 10 p.m. He’s known an eccentric blend of folk, rock, and country.
Wednesday: Listen up, brides-to-be: from 7-9:30 p.m., Inside the Envelope gathers some of the best local bridal and event vendors in the wedding biz for Eat, Drink, and Prepare to get Married. For the kiddies, Blue Bicycle Books and author Jonathan Miller are hosting a reading for the latest Sammy the Wonder Dachshund book called Sammy on Safari. Story time begins at 4 p.m. Juice boxes will be provided.
Thursday: The Tattooed Moose hosts a grand opening from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be food and drink specials all day, and live music from Jason and the Juggernauts. After that, you can stop by at the Halsey at 5 p.m. and check out the Young Contemporaries exhibit and the Salon des Refusés.
Friday: Everyone’s favorite free event, the Art Walk, returns to take over the French Quarter’s art galleries from 5-8 p.m. For a more family-oriented option, Crossroads Community Church hosts a Space Walk Fun Day from 4-7 p.m. This space-themed carnival features a bouncy Space Walk and a rock climb slide. Face painting, carnival games, and lots of free sugary goodies will be offered as well. End the day with a couple of drinks and some music when the Michael Trent Band takes over The Mill with their melodic Americana/pop-rock.
Saturday: Some places are celebrating Easter a day early this weekend. Starting off the day, Freshfields Village hosts their Easter Festival from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be kids activities, local artwork, and music from John Cusatis. Food and drinks will be provided. Downtown, The Hat Ladies are gathering together on Broad and Meeting to strut their stuff all the way to South Battery from 11-11:20 a.m. And finally, the big daddy of all Easter egg hunts is happening at Coastal Community Church. It’s the largest hunt in Charleston with 30,000 candy-filled eggs all over the campus. Children ages two to fifth grade can participate in this free-for-all candy spree.
