It’s nearly mid-November and places around the area want to help you get ready for the holidays. If you don’t want to admit that it’s mid-November and people are already talking about the holidays (what looneytunes!), then we’ve got some activities to keep you in the dark. Monday. It’s Second Monday at the Charleston Center for Photography. This month, Stacy Pearsall will share the methods she used to capture the powerful portraits on the war front found in her recent photography book Shooter: Combat from Behind the Camera. The written word coauthor Ellie Maas Davis will be there too to shed light on how essays can complement photographer’s stories. Papa Murphy’s is giving away free pizzas all day every day throughout the week. Aptly named “FREE PIZZA OMG” this event requires nothing for the free large pepperoni pie. Tuesday. Be proactive and attend the Estate Planning Class for the basics of planning, wills, and how to start the process. Then, get educated at the next event a part of the Citadel’s War and International Humanitarian Law public seminar series. This installment showcases the research of Johns Hopkins professor Dr. Joshua Muravchik on Humanitarian Intervention, or “The Protection Racket.”
Wednesday. Once you get all that serious business done Tuesday, kick back and laugh at The Big Gun Show on Wednesday. Or mosey on over to the opening exhibits of Laura Dargan’s paintings and Kate Wichlinski’s photography show, Sensation is Already a Memory. Then, head to the Old City Jail for a discussion on urbanism and its history by founder of the I’On Group, Vince Graham.
Thursday. Start your morning with a celebration of America Recycles Day at MUSC. Check out the urban farm and learn about the do’s and don’ts of recycling. Summerville Holiday Open Houses kick off today. Hot cocoa, cookies, and Christmas lights will welcome you at this holiday version of the town’s Third Thursday events. Join EazyPeazy as they launch their new business specializing in party paraphernalia like invitations, favors, decorations and more. Hear the tunes of The Charleston Academy of Music students.
Friday. On your lunch break, get prepped to host a healthy holiday meal at Healthy Holiday Live. View works by painters, jewelers, woodworkers and other craft artisans at the Holiday Art in the Evening. Listen to the musical talents of the College of Charleston vocal program as they perform at the Simons Center. Meet the Lowcountry legends Nathalie Dupree and Cynthia Graubert as they sign their new book, Mastering the Art of Southern Cooking.
Saturday. Start your morning with a trip to the 19th century and learn about “Lady Catherine’s Obsessive Passions: Aristocratic Integrity and a Phantom Daughter.” Professor Vince Lannie will present this lecture at the monthly meeting for the Jane Austen Society of North America. Saturday afternoon, visit the openings for photographer Alistair Nicol and the large-scale works by Benjamin Hollingsworth. And apparently it’s never too early for a Tree Lighting Ceremony. Mt. Pleasant’s Towne Center will host theirs this evening along with horse drawn carriage rides, giveaways and even an appearance by Santa.
Sunday. The Charleston Chapter of the SC Genealogical Society and storyteller Linda Stout want to help you tell your story at the Create and Share Family Stories event. Watch Solar Mamas and see how rural, poor, and often illiterate women can empower themselves and their communities through solar engineering education. Or, listen to the Wind Ensemble Concert at the College of Charleston.
