It’s a relatively slow week in the freeloaders’ world. But don’t forget its Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. The best free activity will be sitting on your couch watching a great white rip a seal to shreds in high definition super slow motion. But if you need a break from watching shark attacks, here are a few free events we found to draw you away from the television for a while.
Monday: Any leftover Idol hopefuls are welcome to audition for the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Spiritual Ensemble. The all-volunteer vocal group directed by Nathan Nelson focuses on African-American spirituals.
Tuesday: Photographer Trey Jaskiewicz opens his Hustling and Haggling (For Art) exhibition of landscape and portrait photographs at Cafe Kronic.
Wednesday: FUNimation at the Movies presents a screening of Eden of the East: Paradise Lost. The anime conspiracy thriller series comes to an end with the final film, Paradise Lost. For a less stressful viewing experience, the Terrace continues its Family Film Series (which is free for kids) with goose classic Fly Away Home.
Thursday: The Aquarium hosts Movies on the Lawn. In honor of Shark Week, the feature movie will be Miracle on 34th Street. Just kidding, its Jaws. In her first Charleston exhibit, Lulie Wallace displays more than 60 of her vibrant floral still lifes. The North Charleston City Gallery hosts the works of Elizabeth Roberts McFalls and Samantha Meeker. McFalls’ historical photography and Meeker’s oil paintings tackle issues of community and love. Thanks to ongCs, debt and credit are now in vogue. Get hip to the trend at the Consumer Credit Report Session. The program will educate people on how to gain and sustain financial assets.
Friday: M Gallery of Fine Art opens the Pastorals and Portraits exhibit. The show is a combination of classic paintings by Kevin Menck and Ken Pledger. Imagining Arts unveils their Be Hip The exhibit is a collection of photographs taken with the Hipstamatic iPhone application. Robert Lange, owner of Robert Lange Studios, opens his In Harmony exhibit showcasing 16 of his new hyperrealist paintings. Social Velocity Artists Lectures hosts discussions with Joseph Labate and Ryan Mandell, whose works explore commercial and suburban societies. Their show opens later that night.
Saturday: The Tennis Block Party brings music, contests, food, and tennis together for one action packed morning. Members of the Family Circle Tennis Center’s Instinctive Tennis Academy will be on hand to give tennis instruction so you can impress at the event’s fast serve challenge.
Sunday: White House Black Market hosts the Sip n’ Shop Girls Night Out after-hours shopping extravaganza with Stella & Dot. The event will include personal styling, free champagne, and complimentary appetizers. Whether the evening continues to be free depends on how strong your self-restraint is.
