Smelling Bacon
The underground parlor game known as Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon is about to get an influx of new South Carolina names. Later this month, Twentieth Century Fox, in association with Hyde Park Entertainment, will descend on the Palmetto State to film Death Sentence, a crime drama starring Bacon, the star of … oh, you know: Kevin Bacon. The film’s based on the 1975 novel by Brian Garfield, Death Sentence, which was the sequel to that author’s better known novel Death Wish — a tale of bloody vigilante justice meted out, in the classic 1974 film of the same name, by the brick-faced Charles Bronson. According to the S.C. Film Commission, Death Sentence is one of two projects Hyde Park Entertainment is filming here this month. Commissioner Jeff Monks wouldn’t yet divulge the second film, but he wasn’t above some horn-tooting.
“This a direct result of a lot of initiatives by the Film Commission,” he said last week. “We’ve been running a very expensive marketing campaign promoting S.C.’s supplier base, crew, the location, the new tax incentives, and how this state can add value to any project shot here. Having a local crew and supplier base is very important. They’re looking for local resources to help them save money and meet their budget. And we’ve been very busy promoting all of that as well as the beauty of South Carolina.”We just can’t wait to hear Kevin Bacon do Bronson: “What about the old American social custom of self-defense? She may be a bobblehead, but she’s no airhead. The Myrtle Beach native and 1990 Clemson grad won the Miss South Carolina pageant in 1987. O’Dell went on to a journalism career for which she’s been nominated for six Emmys and has won three Associated Press Awards. Unfortunately, O’Dell’s canceled a scheduled appearance at Friday’s game.
