Frothy Beard Brewing Company is turning eight on Saturday, March 20, and the West Ashley brewery is celebrating by releasing five new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles-themed beers. After the can release and anniversary, ownership will begin renovations on Frothy Beard’s kitchen to make way for the necessary equipment to expand the food menu, co-owner Michael Biondi told the City Paper.
“We always thought it would be fun to do a mixed four-pack that was themed. We all love the classic Ninja Turtles, and we thought since there’s four of them it would be a good pairing,” Biondi said. “We did them last year, but COVID shut down the anniversary party so we decided to do it again.”
There won’t be a big shindig this year either due to COVID-19, but the brewery will offer beer and food specials along with TMNT merchandise, Biondi said. Last year, the 100 four-packs sold out in half a day, so Frothy Beard made 200 this year and added a fifth beer to the mix — a 9.2% ABV “Sensei” baltic porter. The pack will also include an apricot IPA (Michelangelo), blackberry plum sour (Donatello), red currant sour (Raphael) and IPA with nelson sauvin hops and spirulina (Leonardo).
Frothy Beard recently announced the departure of Zombie Bob’s Pizza owner Ryan Dedrickson, who is leaving the food and beverage industry. The brewery purchased the Zombie Bob’s brand and will expand its menu to include more options — including brunch — once kitchen renovations are complete.
“Right now, we cook everything in pizza ovens and have been doing that for four years,” Biondi said. The new kitchen, which will expand into Biondi’s old office, will feature burners, a flat top, fryers and more, in addition to two of the four existing pizza ovens.
Longtime employee John McKinnon is currently in charge of the Zombie Bob’s operation at the brewery, where renovations should be completed before the end of April.
