It seems like just yesterday that Granville’s Cafe reopened at the corner of Rutledge and Grove, with the promise of staying open and not suffering the same fate as previous incarnations. So much for promises. Granville’s closed again recently after just nine months, leaving the north of Crosstown crowd with very limited options since Moe’s has been closed for renovations since last November. But wait, there’s hope. Biggie’s Gastropub has risen from the ashes with a whole new concept.

Owner Trae Wilson, who still operates his Granville’s catering operation, has teamed up with mixologist Brent Sweatman to create a new spot for the neighborhood to relax, hang out, enjoy cold beer, eat local food, and drink herbaceous cocktails.

“We are going for more of a casual every day spot,” says Sweatman, who promises Biggie’s will be a great place for escaping the King Street madness.

The new gastropub opened for lunch earlier this week, offering a Southern “food bar” (think buffet) with classics like pulled pork, fried and roasted chicken, and seasonal, local vegetables. You can fill up for $10. In the evenings, Sweatman says the menu will be stocked with creative $5 plates plus salads, burgers, and sandwiches.

They are currently extending the bar the entire length of the restaurant and will be installing 14 beer taps. Sweatman says he’ll be mixing up cocktails using fresh herbs, housemade tonic, and ginger beer.

Biggie’s, named after Wilson’s English Mastiff, is planning for a grand opening of July 7. In the meantime, you can stop by for lunch and check it out.
