Charleston’s local chapter of Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) became official in 2018 and incorporated as a nonprofit in 2021 to further its activism efforts to empower working people. With the new year, co-chair Nick Rubin likes to revisit the page of resolutions Woody Guthrie wrote in 1943. One that sticks out to him is “Wake up and fight.” In these strange times, finding the drive to get out and organize can be hard to find, so Rubin picked some songs for City Paper that help him “get up and fight.”

“Which Side Are you On?” – Panopticon
“All You Fascists Bound to Lose” – Resistance Revival Chorus
“John Brown’s Body” – Paul Robeson
“Long Violent History” – Tyler Childers
“Solidarity Forever” – Pete Seeger
