In 2021, local author Gervais Hagerty published her debut novel, In Polite Company, which reveals the intricacies and adventures of a former Charleston debutante. Hagerty can’t listen to songs with lyrics while she writes, since she is too easily distracted. And when she tries instrumental songs, the music has a way of forcing a mood onto her scenes that otherwise wouldn’t be there. So, she writes in silence and cranks up the music during her breaks. She gave City Paper her top five songs to turn up and tune out.
