This winter I spent more than a few drives creeping on what appeared to be a house-turned-cafe at the corner of Irving and Meeting Street Road. With a sign that read “Homey’s Tea Kettle,” how could I not? But on each visit there was nary a teapot nor person in sight.
However, today through the all powerful means of social media, we’ve learned that Homey’s Tea Kettle is not only open, it has been for some three months.
William Bowman is the chef and proprietor of the small soul food and barbecue spot that continues the legacy of his father. “I was a cook as a merchant seaman, but I really learned a lot from my Daddy,” says Bowman. “He was a chief cook in the navy and chief steward merchant marine. Folks called him Homey. That’s where I got the name.”
Bowman’s parents opened what they just called Tea Kettle at 2220 Meeting Street Rd. in the ’50s. “It was a juke joint back then with food,” he says. Today the tiny restaurant serves lunch and dinner three days a week.
On the menu you’ll find slabs of ribs and barbecue chicken in addition to lima beans, ox tails, and frogmore stew. Rum cake and bread pudding are on the menu for dessert.
Homey’s Tea Kettle is open Thurs. and Fri., from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sat. from noon until 9 p.m.
