Dennis Hickman, a tattoo artist at Gilded Mermaid Tattoo Studio, died in a car accident in the early hours of Mon. Jan. 30. Owners of another local tattoo studio, Holy City Tattooing, started a GoFundMe on Monday and have already raised over $27,000 for Hickman’s family, including a wife and three children.

The GoFundMe is flooded with comments from Hickman’s friends and family and former clients who had tattoos done by the artist. The page’s description, from Holy City Tattooing’s Jessica Eisenberg reads:

“Dennis Hickman was an amazing human being with a kind heart, wit and a smile that would always brighten your day. He was, in my husband’s words, the future of real tattooing. He was one of the brightest young tattooists and the tattoo world will suffer his loss.”

A memorial service for Hickman will be held this weekend.

This Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 2-3, Daps Charleston will donate $1 from every mimosa ordered to Hickman’s family.
