Everyone loves a good concept — and good chicken fingers. And Hubee D’s has both in abundance. The new West Ashley fast casual restaurant opened a few weeks ago and is already attracting a loyal crowd for its family-friendly vibe. Owners John Ferguson and Dana Sinkler worked with some heavy hitters in the local design community to come up with a slick country vibe for their chicken finger hut, which is clearly positioning itself to be exported as a franchise (the website says franchising will begin in 2011). For the inaugural location at 975 Savannah Hwy., Reggie Gibson from Gibson Guess Architects designed the interior; Gil Shuler created the logo and graphics, and artist David Boatwright painted a big countrified mural across the interior wall.
But what about the food, right? Well, the menu follows the principles of KISS (keep it simple stupid).
For starters, you can get hot boiled peanuts or some sweet buttermilk cornbread. Main choices include baskets of crispy tenders or nuggets, three kinds of salads, and hickory-smoked jumbo wings. For dessert, there’s D’s Famous Fried Banana Pudding (pudding, fried bananas, chopped vanilla wafers, chocolate, and caramel drizzle), banana pudding ice cream, or an ice cream sandwich. They’ve got sweet tea, which we all know pairs real nice with a basket of fried chicken. But if you’d like a beer, they’ve got not only PBR and Bud ($2.75), but Palmetto Pale Ale and Fat Tire ($3.50) — a nice touch since most fast casual joints are limited to non-alcoholic options.
And that’s about it. If you don’t like chicken, this ain’t your kind of place. But if you do — and really, who doesn’t — then you’ll find yourself at Hubee D’s at one time or another, enjoying freshly prepared chicken (they boast that the menu is made from scratch).
