Harry Potter is coming to Charleston in November and not just to local theaters. The American Library Association chose the Charleston County Public Library, along with 11 other American libraries, to host the traveling exhibit. Harry Potter’s World: Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine, will be on view Nov. 17-Jan. 7.

Though obviously the popular series is fictional, the magic in the books is partially based on historical traditions which played a role in the development of Western science. In addition to the exhibit, CCPL will host several Harry Potter-themed programs, including one for middle- and high-schoolers on the chemistry of Harry Potter on Nov. 22. Jason Coy from the College of Charleston will give a lecture on magic and pre-modern Europe on Dec. 2. The exhibit kicks off with a reception on Nov. 18.
