Our food critic Robert Moss has been posting here about the doings on Daniel Island. The big news out there has been a wonderful new Mediterranean deli called Ali Baba.

As we were putting this week’s paper together, our production guy John Royall (of the Mt. Pleasant Royalls) said he’d seen a sign for another Ali Baba in the old Alair Bistro spot on Houston Northcutt. We figured it had to be the same people opening a second location, but when we contacted the Daniel Island folks they gave us an emphatic no.

“The Ali Baba on Houston Northcutt is NOT affiliated with us.  When we contacted the Secretary of State they said the names were not exact — We are Ali Baba Deli, and they are Ali Baba Mount Pleasant — so they said it was not a conflict. Obviously it will be confusing for customers.”

Wonder if the new Ali Babas will be considering a name change? Especially, considering its modern-day usage as a slang term in the Iraq War. It really shouldn’t be that hard to find something original.

How about one of these:

  • Aladdin’s Lamp
  • Genie’s Place
  • The Magic Carpet
  • 40 Thieves Den
  • Arabian Nights
  • Open Sesame
  • Baba Mustafa
