Etienne Charles

In addition to the annual Holiday Swing concert with the Charleston Jazz Orchestra, set for Wed. Nov. 24 at the Charleston Music Hall, the Jazz Artists of Charleston will handle another special jazz concert this month.

On Sat. Nov. 20, the JAC will present Trinidad-born trumpeter Etienne Charles and his combo at the Charleston Ballet Theatre (477 King St.).

“Etienne is an incredible musician and composer, and we are very fortunate to welcome him back to Charleston for his second appearance with JAC,” reads a press statement from the local organization. Charles’ local debut was in 2008 during JAC’s inaugural Holy City Homecomin’ event at the Footlight Players Theatre with backing from Charleston jazz band Gradual Lean.

Charles will be accompanied by Jacques Schwarz-Bart on saxophone, Nick Rosen on piano, Stan Piper on bass, and Chris Burroughs on drums. Charles’ latest album, Folklore, blends elements of improvisation and jazz stylings with folk rhythms and chants inspired by “the African experience of Trinidad and Tobago.”

Advance tickets are available for $20 (adults) and $15 (students). Visit and for more info.
