James Justin & Co. — the latest solo project from local singer/guitarist and songwriter Justin Burke — plans to unveil a nine-song debut album on Tues. Jan. 12 with a CD release gig at the Pour House. Burke, a native of Virginia, has been living, working, and playing music in Charleston for four years.
His regular band, Jupiter’s Garden, keeps busy in the scene, handling a mix of rock, Americana, and funk styles. His new collection, entitled Southern Son, So Far, leans more toward a rootsy, acoustic Americana vein, though, with elements of bluegrass and gospel. "The album is a sonic portrait with personal stories of life, death, and everything in between," he says. "A ghostly reminder of a new era in American music. Every show I have played, pain I could not trade, and friend I have gained has gotten me to where I am today, and Southern Son, So Far is its testament."
Burke recorded at Plowground Productions, the home studio facility of Jim Donnelly (of The Hawkes). Ben Bridwell (of Band of Horses) added backing vocals to a track titled "The Rescue." The Pour House show will feature guest appearances by members of The Hawkes, Dangermuffin, The Freeloaders, Blue Plantation, White Rhino, and others.
