Known for their weekly “vinyl night” music events, art shows, and full-moon “lunacy” parties, Voodoo Tiki Bar and Lounge (15 Magnolia Road, 843-769-0228) recently announced another rich jazz series, featuring a slew of talented cats from the local scene (many of whom deliveed rousing musical performances during the recent Piccolo Spoleto and “Upstairs at Mistral” events).
Scheduled for Tuesday nights, with no cover charge, things kicked off on June 16 with a set from acclaimed jazz drummer Quentin Baxter‘s combo. On Tuesday, June 23, expect a sharp set of worldly bop and grooves from The Rudy Waltz.
“I’m really excited about this Summer’s line-up, it’s super tight,” says proprietor Jen Kulick. “Highlights are Garage Cuban Band making an appearance and ending the season, with a big, down-and dirty-party with Quiana Parlor at the helm. She rocked the house during Mardi Gras, and we are stoked to have her back for our last night of the Series. If you got nothing better to do, come check it out. It’s free!”
The swingin’ tunes and improv continue at the Avondale joint on Tues. June 30 with a set of acoustic jazz and variety from the Robert Lewis Trio, featuring Lewis on tenor sax, Frank Duvall on bass, and Stuart White on drums. Upcoming events include gigs from Lindsay Holler & The Hollerettes on July 7; Leah Suárez and her combo on July 14; the fiery Garage Cuban Band on July 21; Elise Testone and her funky combo Emotive on July 28; Brazilian-born singer, guitarist, and composer Duda Lucena on Aug. 4; and soul/funk vocalist Quiana Parler and her combo on Aug. 11.
