The first Homegrown Johns Island farmers market kicked off last Saturday with more than 20 farmers and vendors participating, and locals turning out in droves to check out the new event, which is held weekly from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at 3546 Maybank Hwy.

Not only is the market about providing access to fresh, local fare, says market manager Frasier Block, it’s about education and sustainability too. “The market will be committed to improving our local food system through sustainability initiatives, which work to support local farmers and small businesses, reduce waste output, and teach local citizens the benefits of a sustainable life.”

To that end, the Homegrown Farmers Market is teaming up with the Sustainability Institute (SI) for a fundraising oyster roast this Thurs. Jan. 16. The family-friendly event is open to the public and will have all-you-can-eat oysters, a hot dog cart, drinks, and bluegrass music. $25 includes all food and drink and benefits SI and Homegrown. The roast takes place from 6-9:30 p.m. at the Island Oak Shopping Center at 2817 Maybank Hwy. For more information, visit johnsislandfarmersmarket.com
