Staff reports | Federal Food and Drug Administration advisers on Tuesday unanimously recommended the agency authorize Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine for children and teens age 6-17.

Meanwhile, state health officials today reported 10,035 total new cases  of Covid-19 — an increase over last week’s 8,913 — and four total new deaths, compared to last week’s two. As of June 14, 283 Covid-19-positive individuals were hospitalized, and 11 were on ventilators. Compared to last week’s 266 hospitalizations and five ventilators.

About 77 million Americans over the age of 18 have gotten at least a two-dose course of Moderna’s vaccine. But now a panel of outside experts is scheduled to consider the Moderna shot for kids under six — and Pfizer’s vaccine for children under 5 — on Wednesday.

It’s unlikely for there to be a serious immediate demand for the Moderna shots for kids age 6-17 years old, as Pfizer’s vaccine was authorized for kids age 5-11 in October, and approval for teens preceded that authorization by months.

Only around 30% of those eligible kids, however, are fully vaccinated, according to data from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
