As the Lifetime series Army Wives enters its sixth season, veteran TV actress Kim Delaney returns to Fort Marshall as the self-described “edgy and raw” Claudia Joy Holden, wife of Major General Michael Holden and the heart of the military happenings at the fictional army base, acting as a confidante to her fellow army wives and the keeper of their many secrets. Combining elements of her own personality to create the character, Delaney is excited for the obstacles posed for her character in the upcoming season.

“Jeff Melvoin and our writers have continued to give me inspiring material to delve into,” Delaney says. While she would not spill any secrets about the show’s future, she says viewers can expect the arrival of new faces, while some familiar characters will leave. As one of the show’s major characters, we can expect to see Claudia Joy throughout the season as she continues to practice law and support her husband and friends “in good times and rough,” Delaney says.

Premiering in 2007, Army Wives follows the lives of four army wives and an army husband whose wife is in the military. While the series is set at fictional Fort Marshall, home to the also fictional 23rd Airborne Division, the characters deal with true-to-life family drama and everyday life on an army base while also coping with the frequent absence and dangerous positions of their spouses. “We try to keep the characters and the story of the wives as real and authentic as possible,” Delaney says. Throughout the show’s seasons, Claudia Joy has dealt with the loss of a child and her husband’s deployment to a NATO post in Brussels, depicting some of the real-life trials experienced by those in the military.

Though the tone of the show is often serious, Delaney enjoys the close friendships that come with such a long-running show, with the cast, crew, producers, writers, which all adds to Delaney’s excitement for season six and her continued role as Claudia Joy. “We are just having a ball,” she says.

Growing up in Philadelphia and moving to New York City right out of high school to pursue a career in modeling, Delaney has been given a taste of small town life while shooting for Army Wives in and around Charleston for the past six years. “Charleston is extremely charming. People are so gracious,” she says. “Instead of grabbing a coffee to-go, they will actually sit down and talk to you.”

Having recently purchased a home in downtown Charleston along the Battery, Delaney has made the Lowcountry feel like a permanent residence, dining with locals and enjoying the gorgeous beaches like Sullivan’s and Folly. While Army Wives shoots primarily at the North Charleston Air Force and Naval Bases, Delaney mentions the Custom House on Broad Street and “all the charming streets in Charleston” as memorable settings for the army drama.

Season six of Army Wives premieres on Lifetime on March 4 at 9 p.m.
