[image-1]What does 2-row malt smoked in John Lewis’ Austin, TX La Barbecue smoker taste like in a beer? You’re going to have to go to Brew & ‘Cue to find out. The Sun. Nov. 9 event, hosted by COAST Brewing Co., will debut the brewery and brisket baron’s first ever brewski collaboration: La Smoked Porter.
Jaime Tenny, co-owner of COAST tells us that when the brewery and Lewis decided to partner on the event, creating a specialty beer seemed only appropriate. So Lewis took 250 pounds of 2-row malt and smoked it in post oak – a variety of oak that some barbecue purists claim is the only true wood to use in Texas. According to a Food & Wine article, “This particular type of wood creates very little soot when it burns and imparts a mild smoky flavor to the meat.” As to what it will do in a porter, well, Tenny says it’s certainly smoky.
Brew & ‘Cue will feature not only La Smoked Porter and La Barbecue — brisket and Texas hot guts included — but also the sweet meats of Home Team BBQ, in addition to COAST’s full variety of beers. This might be the last time to try Lewis’ goods before he opens Lewis Barbecue at 464 Nassau St. this spring, so we suggest you buy a ticket ($30 a person) stat. Should be la good time.
