Conduct Business in Public

The Rev. Kylon Middleton is pastor of Mount Zion AME Church. A new member of Charleston County Council representing parts of West Ashley, North Charleston and Lincolnville. Before his election in November 2020, Middleton focused his ministerial service on the community at large.

Early in his council life, he asked why payment of over $200,000 was made to an employee going out the door? He turned over crawly things under that contract rock. Raised a question about another similar payment to another high-level employee made earlier in the year. Law enforcement needs to take a serious look at the whys of payments over $200,000 to employees as they went out the door.

Every secret executive session is loaded with the potential for corruption.

The business of the people should not be conducted in secret. Start the needed reform at the next council meeting. The specific scope of the topic to be discussed in the executive session should be spoken out loud beforehand. The secret discussion limited to that specific topic. Contemporaneous notes made, but held in secret until such time that the revelation does not injure a third party or subpoenaed by law enforcement.

During his campaign for the County Council District, Middleton said, “We must be intentional and county government can be a facilitator, helping to bring people together and work out productive solutions.”

No time like the present to facilitate our way to better governance. Close the door on people not learning about what is held in secret. We pay dearly for these secrets.
