I was afraid that Michael Graham’s departure would adversely affect the City Paper‘s ability to weekly irritate/enrage/incite some portion of the population. My fears were allayed with the arrival of Jack Hunter as the Southern Avenger.
For his first column he served up an old favorite, the secondhand smoking issue, with every bit of the blather of his predecessor. Whereas Michael Graham grew data from his fertile imagination to support his theses (the smoking issue being one), the Avenger throws out senseless arguments and hot button items, e.g., bad science, property rights, the Constitution, in a mishmash of an attempt to befuddle the reader into submission.
Mr. Avenger comments early on in his column that his ‘blurry, Saturday night barstool perspective does not make him an expert, much less a scientist.’ One wonders why he didn’t stop right there and go on to discuss something more in the blurry and barstool realm.
I look forward to reading future columns, particularly those where the Avenger, as a declared non-scientist, offers opinions on the reliability of scientific data.
