On March 17, local independent composer Jerry Weston Mize released a collage of audio snippets entitled, Scraps.
“It’s a concept album,” Mize told City Paper. “It’s composed of 19 short songs meant to act as sonic ‘scraps’ as if in a scrapbook. The songs were composed with and inspired by musical ideas I had recorded on my phone from the past 5 years. The record contains many meaningful voice messages from loved ones and personal spoken-word lyrics performed by me. This is an attempt to be as honest as possible with myself and my listeners.”
The record flies by in just over 23 minutes as it mingles melodies within an electronic composition of gathered sounds and studio recordings.
“Feelin’ It” is the one of the most song-sounding splices on the album, featuring Mize’s vocals and keys accompanied by a choir, bassist and drummer he brought in for the track.
It’s safe to say Mize travels within the realm of experimental jazz rap on Scraps, dropping recognizable tones of ukulele, piano and guitar next to dreamy synth variations and recited stanzas.
“What I love as a composer the most is playing with the process of songwriting instead of just using traditional songwriting techniques to write songs that sound good,” Mize said.
The straightforward arrangements heard on his 2021 EP, Together, We Will Be, is far more traditional than this new project.
“I would say this new one is much more transparently me. I really feel like I’m putting myself out there.”
