They’ve already quietly established a home on the web, a lengthy songlist of cool local and regional music, and hosted several songwriters events around town. Now, RadioFreeCharleston.com is ready to step ahead with a full-sized band showcase at the Pour House.
“We want to be a truly independent radio station,” says RadioFreeCharleston.com founder Bunky Odom, who previously worked as a band manager and with various Georgia music firms. “I researched web radio for three years. Basically, I just got sick of listening to F.M. radio, just like everybody else [laughs].”
RadioFreeCharleston.com kicked into action recently as a community commercial web radio station serving the people of Charleston and the Lowcountry. They play a little bit of everything, but emphasize Southern rock, alt-country, and Americana.
“RadioFreeCharleston.com is a community commercial radio,” says Odom. “It’s a new media — web radio. We want to identify ourselves with the community and the variety. We want to develop programs and play music by unsigned artists.”
Calling this gig “The Shakedown at the Local Dive,” Odom and his colleagues aim to present a variety of local groups.
Stratton Lawrence — a City Paper staff writer who’s also a singer/guitarist and the web radio host of RadioFreeCharleston.com‘s weekly program Local Dive — organized the eight-band showcase.
“This gig is designed to promote a weekly radio show I do online once a week,” Lawrence says. “These are artists who have either already appeared on the show, or will be appearing on an upcoming series of shows this winter. The only prerogative to be on my show is that you have be local, and not totally suck … and be original. At this gig, I’ve encouraged all the bands to highlight their original material and to invite any local guest musicians to come up and play. It’s a great opportunity to showcase original music and talent.”
The Pour House celebrates the official reopening of their back deck — a project that has been a roller-coaster experience all year — on Sunday at 4 p.m. with the Shakedown’s “Pickin’ on the Deck” acoustic set, featuring local string players Justin Burke (known for his uniquely atmospheric acoustic looping), Haley Shaw & Friends, and Michael Vick (an acclaimed fretless guitarist), and other special guests.
On the main stage in the music room, alt-country/rock band Kelly Cheats (from Columbia) kick things off at 5:45 p.m., followed by East Cooper funk ensemble Love Butter. Lawrence’s own acoustic rock/groove combo Po’Ridge — replete with drummer Stratton Moore, guitarist Charlie Keller, and singer Stephanie Milford — perform just before a solo set by young “hip-hop fiddle player” Daniel Davis.
By 11 p.m., vocalist Elise Testone and Friends (guitarist Dave Linaburg, pianist Gerald Gregory, and guests), and local trio Dangermuffin (drummer Jim Donnelly, and guitarists Mike Sivilli and Dan Lotti) will ready themselves for the main stage.
“I’d like to see us become a player in the market musically,” says Odom. “We are growing and gaining more listeners each week. I’d like RadioFreeCharleston.com to really be in the swing of things by spring.”
Music lovers should try to get to the Pour House early in the evening. It’s eight acts for seven bucks — plus victuals! Local eatery Daily Dose is catering dinner at 6 p.m., which is included in the ticket price.
