Four animal organizations in the tri-county area will host a Lowcountry Foster Fair at each location from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 26 to connect animal lovers with pets in need of care.
Charleston Animal Society in North Charleston, Berkeley Animal Center in Hanahan, Pet Helpers Adoption Center on Folly Beach and Dorchester Paws Animal Shelter in Summerville are the four participating organizations that will help place dogs and cats in foster homes as part of the event.
The foster fair aims to raise awareness of the benefits of foster care for animal welfare. Thousands of animal lives are saved every year through fostering programs, and shelters cover all costs associated with taking in an animal.
According to the Petco Love foundation, if 2% of pet-owning households would foster, U.S. shelters could eliminate preventable euthanasia.
There are diverse fostering programs available for people of all ages, such as “day out of the shelter” field trips, bottle feeding and sleep overs, according to Charleston Animal Society. Participating in these programs is not only beneficial for people, but also provides stress relief for animals that live in a shelter environment.
“We are looking for BFFs,” said Dorchester Paws’ rescue and rehabilitation manager Lanea Wilson. “BFFs are Best Friend Fosters who will open their homes to animals who are struggling in a shelter environment. There are so many ways to get involved!”
Those interested in fostering can also participate in Berkeley County Animal Center’s Best Friend Fosters program, which focuses efforts on at-risk animal populations that need behavioral modification and support. The program equips foster families with behavior modification techniques to practice and teaches how stress-free animals can transform into happy, healthy pets.
