Since our founding in 1997, the Charleston City Paper has been working hard every day to share the latest in news, food, music, culture and cool stuff in and around the Holy City. Our mission is to bring the best of Charleston to you.
A new shopping concept is hitting Upper King this week, inspired by similar events in major cities like New York and San Francisco. The Pop Up Shop is a collaboration of various local up-and-coming artists, designers, and business owners, spearheaded by Lindsey Carter, an Emerging Designer finalist at Charleston Fashion Week 2009. They’ll be taking over an empty storefront on King Street and offering their wares. But don’t wait for the buzz to die down — as soon as it does, the Pop Up Shop will be gone. It’s all about exposing up-and-comers, attracting traffic to Upper King (particularly during Spoleto), and generating buzz. Besides Carter, with both of her lines Troubadour and Carter Humphrey (with Leigh Humphrey), participants include Clewis Reid, Harper Poe and Molly Purnell of Proud Mary, Sterling Kenan and Caroline Ross of Ross Kenan Interiors, Lauren Lail’s Library: Archives of Fashion, Julie Wheat, Jenny Thompson of Theodosia Jewelry, and artist Kate Long Stevenson. The whole thing kicks off with a free shopping party on Thursday (with sangria!) from 4-8 p.m.
