After spending a few years in Nashville, and turning down a bro-country record deal to pursue his own sound, Tyler Boone has decided to call Charleston home again. And he’s brought back more than his new rock single, “Short Skirt, Bare Knees.”
Boone is now a Taylor Guitars-endorsed artist and (drumroll) will be in a Bravo’s reality television series, A Night with My Ex, which will feature his earlier single, “Paper Wings.”
“I told them ‘no’ from the get-go, but then when they said ‘We’ll use your song,’ I was like, ‘That’s a pretty cool opportunity’ — and that’s why I did it.” says Boone, who says he prefers the bright lights onstage rather than on those of a film set.
The 10-show series brings together estranged couples for a night to “hash out their unresolved issues.” Judging from the trailer, you can expect both smiles and shouting with the guitar-toting Boone and his ex — but you’ll have to tune in yourself to see what really happens. The premiere is on Tues. July 18 at 10 p.m.
Meanwhile, Boone’s new single ditches everything you thought you knew about his music.
Boone has been known for a more pop radio-friendly sound and, most recently, heartfelt acoustic Americana songs, such as his previous single “Paper Wings.”
“I pushed this one kind of soft ballad, John Mayer-esque, Ryan Adams tune,” Boone says, “but it’s not rock ‘n’ roll.”
However, Boone’s new single, “Short Skirt, Bare Knees,” is ripe with electric guitar riffs and drum licks, not to mention the heavy use of an organ.
“I thought it would be fun to write something that’s not like ‘Oh, you broke my heart’ — more like, ‘That person is really attractive, and I really want to get to know them.’ I just kind of went the opposite route with the writing,” he says.
Produced by Coast Record’s Matt Zutell, the single proved itself worthy to stand amidst the modern giants of the rock world after being successfully pitched to DJs at a radio campaign, alongside the new singles of the Killers and Queens of the Stone Age.
“I was like, ‘Oh shit, I have to pitch my single next to the Killers?’ Here’s the Killers, and then here’s this kid Tyler … But when I pitched mine it was amazing because they vote on it, and every DJ in the room said, ‘I’ll take it.’”
And to top it off, he’s launched his very own bourbon brand, Boone’s Bourbon. The whiskey will be released alongside his forthcoming record, which is expected out at the beginning of 2018.
You can listen to “Short Skirt, Bare Knees” now on Soundcloud (above), iTunes, Spotify, and YouTube. Boone performs live at the Windjammer on Sat. Aug. 26 with See Water, Arc & the Stones, and Swim in the Wild.
