Charleston County animal shelters put down more than 6,000 dogs and cats last year. The result of accidental pregnancies, strays, and unwanted pets, the city plans to drastically lower the number this year.

Local organizations and municipalities are teaming up to break the state record for largest spay/neuter event in South Carolina history. The Folly Road Pet Helpers location and the Goose Creek SPCA will perform the spay/neuter procedures for the event on Oct. 9 and 23 for Charleston residents, while residents of Meggett, Hollywood, and Ravenel will have to make appointments by phone in their respective town. Organizations include Pet Helpers, ASPCA, SPCA, Humane Net, and the Coastal Community Foundation.

More info is available at the ASPCA’s website.
