“Luck of the Draw.” That’s how The Hill characterized U.S. Sen. Tim Scott’s rise to the nation’s high house.

After becoming the first African-American senator from the Palmetto State since Reconstruction, Scott has earned the prestigious honor of being the only South Carolinian to appear on The Hill’s “50 Most Beautiful” list. “This is not where I anticipated I would ever be,” he told The Hill (talking about his place in the U.S. Senate, not on the “Most Beautiful” list. But that probably applies too.) The hottest person on Capitol Hill is (apparently) Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, according to the DC daily.

The Hill’s annual list, which takes a city full of political nerds and strokes the ego of a lucky few, looks at each person’s age, hometown, political party and relationship status. You know, the essentials. Scott seemed super optimistic when asked about his “status”:

The 47-year-old bachelor has a girlfriend. “She’s great. We’ll see how it works out.”

But asked to name her, he smiles: “Oh no, I’m smarter that.”

He might be smarter than that, but S.C. political watchers will remember that last year Scott told the state Ethics Commission that he was accompanied on an American Enterprise Institute junket by his mother and “family friend” Zee Patel, who FITS News has said may be Scott’s love interest.

Scott had planned to run for lieutenant governor and then governor before “the good Lord gave me a different path,” he says, which led him to the U.S. Senate. Because of the weird timing of Jim DeMint’s departure, Scott faces a re-election bid both in 2014 and 2016, when DeMint’s term was set to end.
