Charleston native and gospel vocalist Mario Desaussure will take the lead in the May 13 performance “Always & Forever: A Tribute to Luther Vandross” at Charleston Music Hall.

“Always & Forever: A Tribute to Luther Vandross” is the last show of season two of the P.U.R.E. Concert Series under the direction of producer Zandrina Dunning in partnership with local venues to revive Charleston’s live music.

The ensemble behind Desaussure’s powerhouse vocals consists of music director/keyboardist Stephen Washington, bassist LaVontá Green, guitarist Greg Loney, drummer AJ Jenkins, saxophonist Chris Williams and vocalists Javetta Campbell, Ashley Hale, Lori Major, with special guest Laura Ann Wilson from Columbia.

“All of my background singers are my cousins,” Desaussure told City Paper. “We’ve been singing together since we were children. Our family is very musically inclined. Luther Vandross — I grew up on his music. Doing this tribute is an absolute joy for me.”

Tickets are $20 for the 8 p.m. show and can be purchased through Charleston Music Hall.
