Charleston City Council is poised to approve a new valet program on the peninsula. The council was expected to give initial approval to the plan Tuesday night. The proposed ordinance would offer a franchise opportunity for valet service at four locations downtown, utilizing public garages and off-street metered spaces.

The program will operate from 6 p.m. to 12:30 a.m., targeting evening diners who may typically avoid the downtown area because of parking concerns. Local businesses will be allowed to partner with the private valet service to comp parking for customers. Charleston Mayor Joe Riley says the program could be extended to daytime hours if it proves successful. “We’ll learn through the process,” he says.
