Margo Kaufman Gallery hosts their third annual “Margo Loves Spoleto” art show at Hope and Union this Tues., Feb. 23.

The show will showcase the artwork of notable graphic designer and co-founder of Fuzzco, Helen Rice. Although she is well known throughout the community as an outstanding graphic and web designer, few know that she is also an artist.

“I guess I don’t like talking too much about my art,” Rice says. “I tend to start making things up on the spot and it can be dangerous, but I’ve always made art. It inspires my design aesthetic, and it’s a relief to do something that I have complete control over.”

Rice says she likes to keep her art vague. “I try to stop before it’s too late. I prefer squares to circles most of the time,” Rice says. “I like things to look empty sometimes. I like messy things.”

Jeffery Rhodes of Margo Kaufman Gallery is excited to get Rice’s work out to the public. “I think it’s about time Charleston sees her visual, creative artwork,” Rhodes says.

The show is from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., and a percentage of the sales of the artwork will benefit the Spoleto Festival. After the opening on Tues., the show will be up for two weeks at Hope and Union, which is located at 199 St. Philip St. Their phone number is (843) 922-1023.
