What is it? Six South Carolina-based musicians performing serious and thorny chamber music by two great 20th century Russian composers. Pianist Marina Lomazov will be joined by Yuriy Bekker and Alan Molina on violin, Jill King on viola, Norbert Lewandowski on cello, and Joe Rachers on piano.
Why see it? Caveat emptor! This music is heavy, dark, serious, and at times more than a bit thorny. At the premiere of Shostakovich’s Trio No. 2, members of the audience openly wept and demanded that the last movement be repeated. Promptly banned from performance by the Soviet government, it remains one of Shostakovich’s greatest achievements.
Who should go? Lovers of 20th century music should not miss this.
