Staff reports | The state Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) said it supported the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendation last Thursday for Covid-19 booster shots for kids age 5-11 at least five months after their initial vaccination series.

Meanwhile, DHEC today reported 7,044 total new cases  of COVID-19 — a significant increase over last week’s 5,566 — and three total new deaths, compared to last week’s 10.

The CDC’s recommendation followed the federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA)’s authorization for booster shots for the age group earlier in the week. Now, DHEC is encouraging parents across the state to get their children in the age range vaccinated and boosted according to the recommended timelines.

Aside from breaking or other vital news reports, Charleston City Paper is moving from daily COVID-19 reporting to a weekly basis, with reports coinciding with the publishing of data from the state Department of Health and Environmental Control on Tuesdays.
