Charleston Police Officer Omar Brown, one of three candidates challenging Mayor Joe Riley in the Nov. 6 elections, was shot in the leg at the El Cheapo on Dorchester Road. Brown, who’s taking time off from work to focus on his campaign, got into an argument with another customer in the store after they bumped in to each other.

Brown left the store and was in his personal vehicle when the other customer walked up to the vehicle with what appeared to be a handgun. Brown got out of his car and the two men exchanged gunfire.

Brown lost his partner, Dennis LaPage, in 2003 when the officer was killed in the line of duty by a crazed gunman.
